Day 89: Tuesday, June 07, 2011

Today was Yuki’s second weekday after quitting her job. She seems to be doing laundry all the time now on the veranda. While I was in the office this morning, she called me over to see something. Down below there was a crane pulling out of Hayato’s alley. After it turned the corner, the driver looked up and waved me off to stop shooting. It was the same guy who got annoyed with me the other day. I ignored him because who did he think he was causing such a ruckus the past couple of weeks and now telling me that I couldn’t shoot in front of my own house. Yuki and I discussed why construction workers in Japan don’t like to have their pictures taken… Yuki said that maybe since a lot of construction workers had gotten out of jail, ran away, quit school, etc… they didn’t want themselves to be exposed in case their families or someone else, whom they wanted to avoid, were to see it...

After they were gone, the street returned back to normal; and there was no sign that they were even here.

  1. The meticulousness of the workers is mesmerizing. I like how they lay down tarps so that the tracks don't leave any marks or dirt on the pavement wherever it goes. They even go back with a dust pan to get the miniscule morsels they missed.

A pity they're looked down upon when they seem to do such a good job (at keeping you awake).

  2. haha. i am not sure if they are looked down upon here... i heard they make tons of money doing construction though.
but i do think japan is strange and interesting because like bad boys with construction and bad boys in the yakuza... bad boys want to quit school to get out of that system... but the world they end up in also seems there seems to have a tight structure with lots of rules and etiquette that they must obey by.
    just thought that was interesting.

  3. I really like this one - I was reading it on my phone so it took a little while for the pictures to load so I got to see the progression more slowly than if I was looking at it on my computer. I'd sort of guess what was going to happen next and then see the picture, like when they moved the tarps around to the front and when the guy came back to sweep up. Great.
